ARH WA Mental Health PhD Awards Ceremony
2023 - Invitation
Australian Rotary Health and Rotary in Western Australia invite you to the coming award ceremony for our 2022 Australian Rotary Health WA Mental Health PhD awards.
Rotarians, Rotaractors, their colleagues and friends, and others interested in mental well-being (especially in pre-teen years), are also being encouraged to attend.
These awards recognise local researchers, from universities in Western Australia, who completed an excellent PhD thesis in a mental health field in 2022. The selection panel considers this research makes an outstanding contribution to the understanding and promotion of mental health, or understanding, prevention or treatment of mental illness. (Read more ...)
Even if you are unable to attend, if you are willing to support these ‘Vocational Service’ awards, the Humanitix booking system link above enables you to make such a donation. Every contribution helps, as we want to provide awardees with support towards pursuing research career opportunities such as professional conference attendance and similar research networking.
If you know of others interested in the latest mental health research, particularly its implications for young people, and family and community health generally, please share this invitation with them.
It’s finally here! The “My Home” houses are nearing completion and 18 older women who are currently homeless will start moving into their new homes at the end of May.
Rotary WA has been a dedicated supporter of this “My Home” project and can proudly take credit for helping make these houses a reality. Rotary WA has provided homewares, furnishings and garden plants as well as bringing together other community groups such as Zonta, Soroptimists and Catholic Women’s League to work with us to transform the houses into very special homes.
Rotarians are invited to an Open House so they can inspect the houses on Saturday May 6 between 1 and 3pm.
District Governor, Ineke Oliver, will welcome everyone and highlight the work of Rotary WA at 1.30pm.
PARKING. North Fremantle train station car park. Limited street parking in Congdon Street.
COME BY TRAIN. Direct access from North Fremantle train station.

WALKING CAPE TO CAPE FOR ARH
PDG/DGN and ARH Director Pat Schraven, and her friends Paula and Helen, are walking the 130km Cape to Cape Track in the South-West of WA. Patricia, Paula and Helen set off on the 7-day trek on 21 April 2023 and will be posting updates.
Along the way they will be raising awareness of mental health and encouraging donations for research undertaken by one of the largest independent funders of mental health research within Australia, Australian Rotary Health.
All funds raised go to Australian Rotary Health. When it comes to mental health research, lots of little things make a big difference. Donations come in all different sizes too. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

LIFT THE LID WALKS in WA 2023
Kwinana Rotary is holding a Lift the Lid Walk on Sunday 7 May (10am for 11am start for around 20-30 minutes - event to around 2pm).
If any of your members are thinking of something similar, then maybe you might like to send a club/cluster ‘delegate’ to check it out before setting up an event locally for your own cluster/club. Plans are already underway for walks in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Byford Districts, and Booragoon, in October-November 2023. Your club or club cluster can be next!
Your ARH WA team can supply links to many of the community networks that may also be interested in participating, and your local IGA and/or Bendigo Bank is also worth approaching for support. Events planned to date with them are clearly working well.
Lift the Lid Walks are a great way to engage your local community, with Rotary, Australian Rotary Health, and with family and community health generally, especially mental health. This topic resonates in many WA communities, and a local community walk is a fantastic opportunity to broadly involve diverse local stakeholders in a very proactive way.
Your ARH WA team recommends approaching your local IGA stores and/or Bendigo Bank branches, as they have demonstrated willingness to be involved on the ground. It’s a great opportunity to involve parents and children, schools, local health professionals and community care workers, local government and support groups, local police and other state agencies, local service providers and local business people, and many other local groups in what Rotary does best — Service above self!
You are invited to Path of Hope Foundations annual Gala. Where we celebrate Rotary’s amazing efforts in breaking the intergenerational cycle of family violence and supporting the wonderful and hard work of The Salvation Army in Western Australia.
An evening of celebration, HOPE and free from fundraising to enjoy time with friends, good food and wonderful entertainment.
This event is possible thanks to Rotarians passion and generous volunteering. 100% volunteer project!
For more information you are welcome to contact Rebecca Tolstoy | Perth Rotary 0408-931 456 or rebecca@tolstoyconsulting.com

LOOKING FOR A GUEST SPEAKER?
Fleur McDonald is presenting to RC of Mundaring on Wednesday, 26th of July and
Fleur has asked us to reach out to other Rotary clubs to see if they are interested in her presenting at their clubs as well.
Fleur is visiting from Esperance so it would be perfect if she can visit as many Rotary clubs as possible during her time in Perth.
Fleur will also be mentioning her son Hayden - a pilot with autism - who can't do a presentation for us due to other commitments. Hayden started the Facebook page "Wings without Barriers" and is seeking sponsorship to travel solo around Australia in September ~ https://www.facebook.com/wingswithoutbarriers/
The club feels that Fleur and Hayden's stories are worthy of promotion

As a proud member of Rotary, and quite new to Rotary, I am also a proud member of The International Association for Community Development (IACD) https://www.iacdglobal.org/ . Monthly Zoom webinars are held where we discuss subjects such as poverty, homelessness, fund raising, natural disaster relief (Türkiye earthquake) and refugee aid (war in The Ukraine). Participants attend from countries such as Japan, Hong Kong, Canada, USA, Scotland, Kenya, South Africa, the UK, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia. A world conference is held in a different country each year, this year the World Community Development Conference is held from June 20-22, 2023, at the Darwin Convention Centre, https://www.wcdc2023fromtheedge.org.au/
I will be attending this conference in Darwin this year as a proud member of Kwinana Rotary and Rotary WA, I encourage other Rotarians from WA to attend as it is a perfect opportunity for Rotarians to network and share ideas with other community development practitioners on an international stage.
