Empty backpack Backpack items
Help for Homeless in Perth
What started out as simply collecting socks for the homeless this winter grew into something much more, due to the wonderful contributions and generous donations of our amazing local residents, as well as support from the Rotary Club of Karrinyup. Working closely with the Perth City Homeless Group, the club’s Homeless Working Group was able to provide, not only over 300 pairs of socks for distribution but also managed to put together 32 backpacks for men and women for donation to the needy. Each backpack carried a tag identifying that it was a donation from the Rotary Club of Karrinyup. Recently these were delivered for distribution by the Perth City Homeless Support Group.
According to the Zero Project, in December 2021 there were 1,001 people known to be living homeless in Perth and Fremantle. We know that number to be increasing at an alarming rate.
Did you know that the majority of Rotarians join Rotary because a Rotarian invited them?
Join DG Ineke and her team as we explore how you can share your unique Rotary story without getting tongue-tied or leaving out the invitation bit!
This will be an enjoyable afternoon where we will learn from each other as well as from others who do this very well. Come along if you have something to learn, something to share or a mix of the two!
It is all on Zoom, to ensure you can attend in the comfort of your own home and be ‘covid-safe’. You are also welcome to get together with others and join in as a group. We will be finishing with a BYO sundowner.
This is the first of our Adventure series this year. We are very excited to get started! See you there!

The Rotary Club of Ballajura-Malaga is holding its
Annual Ballajura Community Fair on Sunday 14th August 2022.
The Fair is designed to give enjoyment to the whole family with multicultural displays, dancing, clowns, fair ground activities, craft, food and novelty stalls,
and more.
Admission to the fair is by gold coin donation, and proceeds made by the Rotary Club though entry and the sale of bays will go towards community projects.
Non-stop entertainment including local school bands, choirs, dance troupes, gymnasts, martial art displays, a talent show and much more plus a large number of craft and food stalls are expected to attract a large crowd on the day.
Around our communities there are families that join clubs and there are families and people who do not join clubs – any club. Probus members are families that join clubs, and almost every Probus member has offspring, many of whom would see membership of a Rotary Club as worthwhile and even prestigious. I believe it is eminently worth the effort for a Rotary Club to be visible with a Probus Club and to share materials aimed specifically at their children or grandchildren to consider membership. In other words, it should be to a Rotary Club’s advantage to have a connection to their local Probus Clubs as an integral part of their recruitment of suitable members!
Some Rotary Clubs now feel that Probus is no longer connected with Rotary, or acknowledged by Rotary International, but here is an extract from the Official Rotary Code of Policies: “Rotary clubs may, at no cost to RI. organise and support PROBUS clubs as a worthwhile community service activity”.
In helping to achieve a better connection between Probus Clubs and the Rotary Club who has been their sponsor within your District, a first step may be to have the Rotary Club invite several members of the Probus Club attend a Rotary meeting and tell Rotarians about the activities of their Probus Club.
Probus clubs are often seeking guest speakers for their meetings, and perhaps a Rotary Club may provide names of guest speakers that they could utilise. The Rotary Club President, or representative could also offer to do a presentation to the Probus Club to explain the programs that the Club has for the year ahead and invite Probus members to become involved if they wish.
There may also be an opportunity for some Probus members to become Rotarians, or equally Rotarians who no longer work full time to join the Probus Club. Many older Rotarians that I know personally, including myself, belong to both Rotary and Probus.
A Rotary Club within your District may see an opportunity to form a new Probus Club as a service to the senior members of their community The process for doing this is much easier than it was many years ago. There is also financial support available from PSPL who will assist with advertising, printing of brochures and guidance. There are also Probus District Chairmen, as well as me, who will assist individual clubs.
Please feel welcome to phone or email me at any time if I can assist with information about Probus or contact details of Probus clubs within your district.
