Considerable interest has been expressed by members of Rotary in addressing the homeless situation in Perth.  At the Homeless Hub strategy meeting chaired by Dr Ken Mullin on 7 August 2019,  it was agreed that our main effort should be on fixing the problem rather than managing it.  To that end an opportunity is currently available for us to consider the potential for Rotary Clubs to assist in getting homeless people into housing.

The “My Home” project, developed by award winning Perth Architect Michelle Blakeley “brings government, corporate sector and community together to provide an efficient, low-cost housing option for homeless people. The project is based on the global best practice Housing First model which has proven that providing longer term housing as the first step to help homeless people is more effective and efficient. This enables better access to support services by virtue of a fixed address. The project also demonstrates the importance of good design and sustainable practices for low-income affordable housing. “My Home” is aiming to have 150 homes completed and occupied within 12 months of signing of land leases. State government has already confirmed five sites for “My Home” houses and the initial target market is women over 55, who represent the fastest growing group of homeless people.
A special meeting has been set up on Monday 18th November to brief interested parties on the project and canvass the likely level of support from Rotary members and Clubs. At the meeting, Michelle Blakeley will describe the project, provide information on the Rotarians and Rotary Clubs on the status of a number of potential projects in the process of being developed and to offer the potential for Rotary in WA getting involved in the development of a housing project.
